Computer Slowdown?

Like millions more, I am frustrated , with my desktop and laptop, due to slowing down. I have had Norton, AVg Free, and I am now trying CA Virus%26 Spyware checker. I have run msconfig, stopped all uneccessary start up programmes, but stii find it is very slow. I have an Iqon AMD Sempron 2800+200ghz, 256 MBRAm and 74.5 GB Hard drive.Using Windows XP Prof. Any suggestions? Appreciated. Lap Top is a Presario 2100. Hi, My PC's has been trouble free for the last 16 months! no viruses, spyware or anything! but in the last week i've been getting a message that pops up every 5-10 minutes saying the following:

svchost.ese - no disk

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D.

You then have to hit cancel 10-20 times until is goes.

Any ideas how to solve this one?

when you start up svchost loads services from the registry to run. there can be more than one instance of svchost in the task manager (conrol-alt-delete)

if your main boot drive (the one with windows on) has been renamed then it could be the case that a removeable drive is now calling it's self c drive.

for example if windows resides on d: and c: is a memory stick drive then svchost will be looking for the services to load in the c drive. so if there is nothing in c: it will ask you to load the disk (whereas in reality it should be looking in d:)

click start- my computer to check which drive has the windows folder and then rename the drive if neccessary.

First you must clean-up the current infection.

Run both of these on-line scans and let them remove what they find. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install your current protections before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no download) with BitDefender's Online Scanner

Its a false positive. The hosts entry is just the default search provider for Internet Explorer. STOPzilla is known for alot of ridiculous false positives.It used to contain spyware a few years ago. I hear they stopped distributing spyware, but it's still a mediocre program. I hear the pop-up blocker is the best part of it.

You can edit the Hosts file entries in Notepad. But, just like the Registry, make a full backup of it before you start. Deleting entries is fairly simple, just highlight them, click backspace then Save.

I've never liked popup blockers because they usually stop what's already infecting your computer. Use a firewall, an antivirus and some anti-spyware applications.
You can manually delete the key by going Start %26gt; run %26gt; "regedit"

Then search for the key yourself.

Let me warn you first, be sure to back up your registry before you do anything because your computer may suffer from permanent damages should you try to delete any keys which are necessary for the start up of your computer. If I were you, I won't touch those stuffs. I will probably ignore that spyware that STOPzilla claims it is. Don't trust it!

No it is NOT "safe". ALL P2P has inherrant risks. If you are well educated you can minimize those risks. If you are not well versed in computers, you shouldn't use P2P. the first rule of downloading things off the internet, is that there will always be potential problem if you do stupid things, including downloading. limewire is one of the worst programs to use for downloading. alternatives like firewire are no better. they work on a peer-2-peer network where you are reliant on one person for a file so it's slow for larger files and you don't know if the file you are downloading is legit. moreover many of the programs are ridden with spyware for example kaza had a spyware built into it so that's why people switched over to kaza lite.

the best alternatives to limewire would be torrents or irc. torrents are simpler to use. torrents are files broken up into a bunch of little pieces. seeders are people who are sharing the entire complete file. leechers are people with only certain parts of the files. you use torrent programs like utorrent or bitcomet which will locate and reassemble all the pieces for you. the more leechers and seeders the better and faster. this is more efficient for larger files because you aren't reliant on one person for the file. for more detailed the best info site is slyck.com

I can't delete Pest Capture?

I have Windows XP. I was notified that I was infected with Trojan and other viri. It was suggested to down load various free scans. Pest Capture was my choise only because it was the first one. After download and free scan it reported that I had malware and spyware viri and I should purchase the license to continue. Since I don't like to give credit card info over the Net I declined. Now I have this Huge dialogue Pest Capture box on my screen and am unable to delete because it states the "uninstall or remove has been disabled". And it's TRUE. Well, I went and looked for it in Yahoo! and found the website, NO it's not Ad-aware Se its different, but it is on "download.com" website, which is affiliated by C-Net. So there "alright" in my book, but it's up to you. Ad-aware Se is better, I have been using it for years, three or 4 so far....great program, easy and simple and runs really fast. I also have Reg Mechanic, Norton (but runs slow, and bogs my 2.4 gig down) AVG (runs a bit faster than norton) and PC Tools Antivirus (same makers of Registry Mechanic) and i still get some viruses, but I get rid of them too and keep most of them out. I have not used Adaware SE 2007 yet, but I have used the AdAware Line for years. You can get the free version from www.lavasoft.de and try it out. Like I said, I have used it for years - the free version that is. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org. Both scanners seem to find different things but find a lot of the same spyware, adware and malware. Additional software from www.javacoolsoftware.com would be SpywareBlaster and Spyguard. You install those two and basically forget them - except for updates. The first two you need to schedule scans or perform manual scans periodically. Hope this helps...

1)Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start %26gt; Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable Windows system components.

2) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware.

4) Clean up the registry. This is controversial, as some experts claim registry cleaners don't really help. I've seen evidence to the contrary, so I recommend doing it if you've got a major slowdown. CCleaner is free and worth running.

I had my computer crash and when i installed windows xp durring that time i left a firewall on with maybe a couple exceptions but i didnt get the service pack 2 untill maybe a month later so i havent used a new firewall and i didnt use

What does this mean? I just did a virus scan/spyware scan (McAfee and Windows Defender). I have my automatic updates all installed. McAfee firewall is on to a high level. And my internet settings are on to the recommended level. This just started to happen now... it was working fine yesterday.

If you're NOT doing multiple searches in a short timeframe, then follow the instructions about looking for a virus and/or spyware that's running searches from your IP/machine automatically.

As a result of using Internet I had massive problems with Spywares and viruses. I installed a toolbar and it came packaged with spyware and clutter up my browser with useless buttons. It happened quite a long time ago and I just tolerated that. But the serious problems started when I opened unknown email letter. One of virus on my computer was a really invasive spywere and made me to think seriously about doing something. I tried to delete some files I considered to be bad in a safe mode but it didn鈥檛 work. I thereafter routinely ran several antispyware programs, none of which eradicated the spyware totally. I've tried some protection systems, the free ones. As I鈥檓 not very experienced in that case I used the most typical programs. While trying different anti-viruses and anti-spyweres I downloaded the Spy-Shredder. I just wanted to put in a good word for the program. Actually it鈥檚 a great program and it helped me much. I have not had a spyware infection since I switched over to it and I haven't had any unwanted pop-ups either. I wanted to thank the guys who made the anti-spywere. I spent so many hours solving problems of my computer and trying to delete malicious stuff from it. Just love the program!

Hi, I have BT Total Broadband with the homehub which has the firewall set to the standard setting. My laptop is running like a dog and I was wondering if this is because there are conflicts with my Windows Firewall - but I don't want to turn it off without some advise first. So you've been taking some crap about Norton? Good! haha! OK, so it was free...so is the much better and faster Avast.

Anyway, on your computer, only run ONE software firewall. I dont know the "homehub", but it sounds like an external box - in which case it is not hurting you. If it is software (program running on your computer), disable it and only run the windows firewall. Check out your exceptions tab and disable appropriately.

Try running ccleaner (.com) and winpatrol (.com) to speed yourself up.

It's not the windows firewall do not turn it off the problem with your system is the Norton Antivirous take it off it's slowing your system to a halt. Bare in mind that Norton doesn't find viruses it only creates problems for your system as you can see. Avast is good but i have also just taken this off as it was conflicting my system making the start bar and all my icon's on the desktop dissapeared it was letting a vital virus in of which as been reported to Avast. Install Spybot, Adaware, and Avg version 7. Hope this helps..

Im having alot of pop ups on my laptop and my desktop computer things. I don't really recommend either Mcafee or Norton, as they are both bloated packages that use way too much memory causing your PC to run more slowly than it should. As far as the trial version thing goes...a trial for an antivirus program will stop allowing you to update to the latest virus definitions after the trial runs out. That means you will not be protected against any new viruses. In my opinion, there is no need to spend money on virus and spyware protection for your home PC. This is the effect of free edition of AVG. May I suggest you try the nod 32, kaspersky, or block defender free edition. I have tried them already. At present in our office computer installed with nod 32, and at home block defender, they are doing good performance.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search %26 Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry

What is all this on my SPYBOT and this SPYWAREBOT???

I downloaded this free program thinking it was feee to scan for spyware. I scanned with thit and it pulled up things that looks like a scam just to buy this program...as when it finished scanning it sayed I have 3800 items that needed to be tended to and then it sayed I had to register and buy the program to delete these items???? Then I found the SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY and it found a lot of things on registry and other things. Then it says before setup to make backup of registry keys in case something goes wrong when scanning and deleted infections. Is all this normal and safe???? Zune and itune video?

i have a zune and i wanna downlaod videos, tv shows and movies from itunes on accout that the zune software doesnt have that. and the only way i have been able to convert my i tunes songs is to burn them to a cd them rip them int windows media player. but i cant do that with videos. can someone tell me a FREE software that is reliable, not full of viruses,/spyware. and that doesnt only convert half of my video. i also read that for like 49 cents extra you can download i tunes so it can be put on another mp3 player. how could i do that?
