PC Maintenance?

What are the best ways to keep my pc running fast and free of issues? I have McAfee Total Protection and Spyware Doctor which i run regularly. Also I use defrag on xp. Is there anything else I should do?

PC Maintenance?aurora

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/...... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run---http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSp...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html....

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:

- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.

- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

BT Total Broadband and Windows Firewall conflicts?

Hi, I have BT Total Broadband with the homehub which has the firewall set to the standard setting. My laptop is running like a dog and I was wondering if this is because there are conflicts with my Windows Firewall - but I don't want to turn it off without some advise first. I am running XP, Norton antivirus (I know everyone hates it and this is taking up resource, but I got 3 years free with my IBM laptop!!), Adaware SE Personal %26 Norton Spyware Scan.

Any thoughts!!

So you've been taking some crap about Norton? Good! haha! OK, so it was free...so is the much better and faster Avast.

Anyway, on your computer, only run ONE software firewall. I dont know the "homehub", but it sounds like an external box - in which case it is not hurting you. If it is software (program running on your computer), disable it and only run the windows firewall. Check out your exceptions tab and disable appropriately.

Try running ccleaner (.com) and winpatrol (.com) to speed yourself up.

What does your laptop do? I don't think I fully understand your situation. Please explain better?
It's not the windows firewall do not turn it off the problem with your system is the Norton Antivirous take it off it's slowing your system to a halt. Bare in mind that Norton doesn't find viruses it only creates problems for your system as you can see. Avast is good but i have also just taken this off as it was conflicting my system making the start bar and all my icon's on the desktop dissapeared it was letting a vital virus in of which as been reported to Avast. Install Spybot, Adaware, and Avg version 7. Hope this helps..
Get rid of the Nortons.

PS, "advice" is spelt with a "c" and not an "s"
Download a free firewall from PCTools, switch off Windows Firewall and install the one that you have downloaded, see if that makes any difference

Reviews on best p2p file sharing programs?

I have the limewire Pro, but I am sick of paying for these updates. What's a easy free program and easy interface file networking program? No spyware or crud attached, Please don't suggest, morpheus or kazaa, or limewire regular. What are you reviews on some really good p2p file sharing network? And what do you think about, frostwire?

Any suggestions would gladly be appreciated....

And please be more specific, thank-you.

Which one do i pick?

Im having alot of pop ups on my laptop and my desktop computer things. I have a network at home linksys router and card anyways....when I x them out..the window clsoes and then reopens in mozzila or explorer which ever im running at the time then starts running some sort of scan telling my puter is infected, this is constant more with the laptop than the desktop. I have etrust on the laptop and had AVG free addition "unistalled a few min's ago"

%26 Webroot on the desktop. So I was searching around and came across Mcafee %26 Norton. Which is the better buy?

Also, what happens to the spyware and trojans and viruses when you use a free 30 day trial and decide not to purchase the product. I have uninstalled the avg from my computer and was wondering where does it all go. It ask if I wanted to delete the virus volt and all its contents. My sound silly but Im curious.

Which one do i pick?best antivirus software

I don't really recommend either Mcafee or Norton, as they are both bloated packages that use way too much memory causing your PC to run more slowly than it should. As far as the trial version thing goes...a trial for an antivirus program will stop allowing you to update to the latest virus definitions after the trial runs out. That means you will not be protected against any new viruses. In my opinion, there is no need to spend money on virus and spyware protection for your home PC. Check out the guide at http://linsite.com/2008/02/18/virus-and-... for download links to some excellent free antvirus and spyware tools as well as instructions for using them.

Why does my pc scan so often?

I have the free editions of AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware. They seem to be scanning almost all the time, which means my pc is constantly running slowly. How can i get them to scan less often or at times when i know i won't be using my pc?.

For both go into the program options and select a schedule to scan your computer when it is turned on and not in use. Also AVG Antispyware may have active scanning to block spyware before installation so you have to weigh the pros and cons of disabling this feature.

It must be with auto protect, but you shouldbe feeling the slowness unless your pc is a really low config one. Schedule if the best option, although i wouldnt suggest to turn auto protect off..
Friend Dave G,

This is the effect of free edition of AVG. May I suggest you try the nod 32, kaspersky, or block defender free edition. I have tried them already. At present in our office computer installed with nod 32, and at home block defender, they are doing good performance.

Best regards.

There is a new toolbar on my system I dont want it but it wont go away. It seems to be a pop up.?

It keeps interupting my work. It says I may have viruses and I can do a free scan. I click The button that says remove spyware, but it only continues. It cant seem to be deleted. It just stays there and pops up with nonsense about possible viruses. Can someone help me?

Firstly update and run your anti-virus product. You can also run a free online scan as well as some malware can actually corrupt or disable your resident security products. Here are a few online scans you can run:

Trend - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/...

Panda - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ac...

Norton - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/defau...

Second download, update and run scans using the following products:

SuperAntispyware

http://superantispyware.com/

Spybot S%26D (free version requires manual updating)

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl...

AVG AntiSpyware

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tp...

Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-a...

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)

Third, after cleaning your system, disable System Restore, reboot and re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be lurking in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point. Additionally, a reboot may be required to complete the malware removal process.

Does anyone know how to make ringtones??

I think it would be really awesome if I was able to make my own ringtones from music I have. Or, is there somewhere I can download midi/mp3 clips for free (that wouldn't give me a bunch of spyware or require entering my phone number) that I could then send to my phone from my computer? Is that even possible? I was checking out phonezoo.com and it was looking really awesome but I didn't want to give out my cell phone number...

I have a Samsung t209 and my carrier is T-Mobile.

If you have transfer software %26 a USB cable(or some other way to transfer stuff to yourr phone from the PC) for your phone already, Download Power MP3 Cutter from http://www.download.com. The max length is 30 seconds, but that's more than enough for a ringtone.

Or try this website; all you have to do is register with just an email address and you can download it to your PC; no need to give them your cell phone number. http://www.mobiles24.com/

Remeber that you only have 3MB shared on the phone; meaning you won't be able to download a lot of ringtones for the phone, because the memory is being shared by everything; text messages, games, phone numbers, etc.
