I would highly recommend Windows Defender (if your using Windows that is). Microsoft purchased the software from a company called Giant a few years back. Giant had the best engine and definitions for spyware/adware and now microsoft took that and made it free. goto: www.microsoft.com/spyware
(I know you didnt ask for virus protection, but in case you ever need it in the future use AVG Free Personal Edition. Its the best on the market, in my opinion for the end/home user. http://free.grisoft.com )

Keep in mind that these software do not always fully remove adware and that some may require "hand" work on your system to be fully removed.
