More then one anti-virus is generally preferred as long is only one of them is using resident real time protection. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware, so it is always a good idea to have a second scanner that is running on-demand only, and alternate scanning with each every few days or so.

Undoubtedly, the most widely used combination of antispyware is Spybot Search and Destroy

and the free version of AdAware SE

Activate the "Teatimer" and "Immunize" using the advanced settings on Spybot which will be your real-time protection. Spybot will be your primary scanner for your regular full system scans, which you should alternate with Ad Aware.

This is a very effective and free combination.

Just keep everything updated and this includes Windows Updates which come out on the second Tuesday of every month.
