i mean, is it illegal (why is it free?). and is there a possibility of getting a virus or spyware by visiting and reading manga from manga websites?

There's always a risk of getting spyware, no matter which site you go to. As long as the manga is free, I wouldn't worry too much.
I would, however, recommend that if you liked the manga to purchase an available commercial copy. (Typing that is obligatory, I guess.) If it's not available in the US, then don't feel guilty. I've read tons of manga (both licensed %26 non-licensed) online %26 not gotten any viruses or such. If I like the manga I'll purchase it. If not, then what is the difference between looking at it online %26 looking at it inside a bookstore?

If it's on a website then you ahve no reason to be worried as long as the person isn't getting money from you to read it. If the person posted it on there site without asking then it would fall to them and not you as you would assume that they followed the right guide lines for posting.
You can get spyware or a virus from ny random site, most manga sites proably don't have much because they're run by teenagers and so actually safer. Just make sure that you have your virus protection on all the time and you'll be safe.
Also run a scan every week to be 100% sure.
