My computer is sick! I've run AdAware several times and it's still really slow. What to do

I am almost sure it's just malware/spyware (whatever the difference is?). What other free user friendly programs besides AdAware SE are good to clean systems? I've ran Symantec antivirus and nothing. I've used disk cleanup also. What else can I do to get my PC back to how it was 2 days ago. System restore has never worked on my computer. Also, at startup I get a Wild Tangent not found message, and this has been for a few years now and does not seem to be too harmful, (It seems to come from another bad program that I deleted), but I'd like to be fully rid of it. What can I do to kick all this unwanted material out of my system???

try spybot search and destroy( free) and spyware doctor (free from thie link below). Also some spyware takes more then just a scan to get rid of. I suggest you take the results of what ever these programs detect and type them into google and look at tips for completely removing them. Spyware doctor is good for this because anything with a rating of medium of high must be removed by the user also. Most spyware can be found on symtecs database with detailed instructions of how to remove it.
